Native American Flute Music collected by Frances Densmore

Native American Flute Music collected by Frances Densmore

Steven Gigante - Native American Flute

Mike Brecker - Drum

Native American music is and has been a major part of Native American culture. Anthropologist Fancis Densmore collected this music that is performed by Steven Gigante and Mike Brecker. She spent time in the early 20th century collecting the songs of the Dakota Indians. She was instrumental in recording and transcribing their music. Through her efforts she would help the Native Americans preserve their heritage and culture. This would allow other generations of musicians to study and recreate the music Fancis Densmore had transcribed. It is vitally important to recreate music and learn how to incorporate the music of a native culture into our own.

  1. It is great that there are people so dedicated to preserving the music of these cultures. They not only help us know what the music sounded like, but like you said they also help us learn how to recreate it so that it can continue on in future generations.
